All Minnesota students, beginning with those enrolled in 9th grade in school year 2017-18, must take and pass a state-mandated civics exam before they graduate.
This exam can be given at any point during high school, in any format, as many times as it takes for students to pass. Passing is 30+ out of 50 questions correct.
Students cannot be prevented from graduating if they do not pass the test.
Although it is called a “civics test” in the legislation, the questions connect with a broader set of social studies standards.
On the right are tests you can use to meet the state requirement. You are welcome to change the format as long as the 50 questions are on the exam. The test may be translated into other languages for EL students, however if it is given in English, you may not change the wording of the questions.
We are not empowered by the law to provide students a formal way to opt-out of the exam.
All students, unless excused in their IEP, must pass the test.
